The Gentle Grief of TRANSITIONS: A Love Letter to Letting Go

No one warned me that weaning would feel like a kind of grief. That something so natural, so expected, could feel like a quiet heartbreak.

For 18 months, breastfeeding was our rhythm. It was more than just feeding. It was comfort. It was presence. It was a silent language we spoke only to each other. In the stillness of those moments, it was as if time paused just for us away from the noise of the house-hold.

And now, the pauses are shorter. The stillness less frequent. He is ready. My body is ready. But my heart? Not quite.

It’s hard to explain the ache that comes when something so sacred begins to fade. Not because it’s wrong. But because it was so right.

I know I’m not the only one. And I also know that every feeding journey looks different—whether bottle, breast, formula, or tube. This isn’t about how we fed, but the sacredness of the connection we made while doing it. For me, that sacredness happened during breastfeeding. And now, that chapter is closing.

But here's the thing about motherhood: it’s a constant stream of transitions. They outgrow swaddles. Then onesies. Then your lap. Then whole seasons of your life. And with every shift, something beautiful is left behind, but something new begins.

So, I’m learning to hold both. The grief and the gratitude .The loss and the love. Because this, too, is part of being a mom: To love deeply, and let go gently.

Weaning is not the end of closeness. It’s just a new way of being close.

And while I may never again nurse him to sleep, I will always hold the memory of his hand curled around my finger, his lashes fluttering, both of us breathing in sync.

To every mama navigating her own transition, this one, or another, may you know this: You’re allowed to feel the sadness. You’re allowed to pause before letting go. And you’re allowed to celebrate the gift that was before reaching for what will be.

Because growing together is the most beautiful kind of goodbye.

Which transitions were tough for you? Let us know in the comments.
